Check out this video of an Interview with actor Ed Norton about this amazing project in New York; the High line. The Highline is an abandon rail corridor that cuts right through Manhattan. As is often the case abandon space is green space. The old Sanborn maps are a good source of info about old rights of way; one of the things that John Stilgoe discusses at length in the book Outside LIes Magic.
