From On the River
Govern Mason was the first steamboat to make it up the rapids in the late 1830s. As it was at the base of the rapids, the steamboat ran out of fuel, wood, and could not create enough steam to make it up. After refueling, Indians and oxen were commissioned to help her to the top. Though the ride up turned out successful, the trip down, however, was not. The steamboat had a lot of damage after her attempts to ride down the rapids.
