From On the River
The Great Log Jam of 1883 happened because of unusually rains during June and July, and when the lumber companies marked their 'property' it was too much for the river to handle. On July 26th 100,000,000 feet of logs shot through downtown in less than 2 hours. What was then the D & M iron bridge blocked the pathway and the logs massed to 30ft and 7-6 miles long. Under this massive weight, the bridge broke. The wreckage took 3 weeks of intensive labor to clean up, and few logs reached Lake Michigan.
